i had a simular problem with sound on my GRX700 which using ACPI
solved. a couple pointers that helped me:
http://www.prongs.org/linux/sony/
and
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=36832&release_id=83005
i'm usinga vanilla kernel 2.4.21 with the acpi-20030619-2.4.21.diff
patch applied.
