I'm running Debian (via Knoppix).  I've recompiled and everything seems to
be working great! (Although I haven't tried suspending or shutting down
yet). Thank you all.

On a side note, I built a 2.6.0-test2 kernel last night to see if the same
behaviour could be found there and the screen was blank while the system
loaded.  Is there an option that must be passed to lilo or something to
allow for the messages to be seen at boot time?
