Yeah, I hear you.  But this is how a newbie learns.  I struggled with 
the RedHat source for awhile, figuring it was my problem that the 
patches couldn't be applied.

Well, there's another reason I couldn't get ACIP working, then.  I 
didn't know ACPI required APIC.

I call the method I use to solve problems "Superstition and Ignorance." 
  I try things in a semi-scientific way and futz around till they work. 
  That's what happened here - and that's what took so long.
