First, I think you should not create a hard link (as you did) but a 
symbolic link (using ln -s). Check "man ln" for more details on this.

Second, surely, you need a module (a driver) to use the modem. Your 
distribution should select the appropriate one. However, if this is not 
the case, you won't get anything. It doesn't what you do with wvdial or 
anything else. You can check available modules using "lsmod".

If a module was loaded, you should get some log message. You may check:

dmesg | grep -i modem
cat /var/log/messages | grep -i modem
cat /var/log/errors | grep -i modem

and anything that may look as an appropriate log under /var/log/

Third, you can get an approximation to where and which is your modem 
using lspci. For example, in my case:

root@localhost ~# lspci | grep -i modem
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) 
AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03)


Fourth, isn't there any tool to configure/detect the modem under suse? 
It would be interesting (also for the Suse developers) to know what the 
above logs show after you try to use the proper tool to configure/detect 
the modem.
