Don't agree with the previous posters... If you're brand new, I'd recommend pulling the Knoppix distribution. Live CD, doesn't touch the hard drive, meaning it's pretty harmless. In distributions, i386 generally means all versions of 32 bit Intel chips. 485 and 586 variants have supersets of the instruction set so anything that works for a 386 chip will definitely work if your machine happens to have a more recent CPU ... it just won't use some of the newer opcodes. The reverse isn't quite always the case... But if you have a 32 bit Intel CPU (which covers the vast majority of us), you don't want the Mac (ppc) or HP or SPARC or 64-bit Intel (x86_64) or ... distributions.
