So the summary is that you got it working in Slackware with kernel 2.4. 
Perhaps, the problem is kernel 2.6. Maybe a regression, or the method is 
different. Are you really using the IR port of the laptop and not a 
special port designed for remote control? I mean, maybe your laptop has 
such feature.
