Or maybe we configured differently upon compilation 
of lirc?
I chose 1 > 6 > 1 > 1
             2 > 1+2

Not sure what you mean here! If you meant that the
laptop came with a remote (like e.g. Qosmio)
definitely
not so.

BTW, do you use devfs? Maybe that could explain how we
got different lirc devs.
