% lspci

If you can recognize the sound card in the output, then you have the 
first step.

Other interesting info would be your kernel version (use "uname -a") and 
which sound modules are you running (use "lsmod | grep snd").

Finally, you can download and burn a recent live cd (which does not 
modify your harddrive nor installs anything) and test if the sound works 
with it. I recommend the latest Ubuntu: 
ftp://ftp.is.co.za/linux/distributions/ubuntu/releases/5.10/ubuntu-5.10-live-i386.iso
