How to you get external video on Toshiba laptops, running Linux, to work ... right?


Situation.  I have two Toshiba laptops:
	- Satellite P15 running Fedora Core 4.  I installed FnFx and hooked up a video projector.  When I press Fn-F5, the LCD video winks out as I'd expect.  Press again, and I do get a video feed to the projector, but it's gibberish.  Press again and I get a picture on both machines.  The projector remains gibberish and the LCD is only the left half of the screen, but centered.  Logout/login resets the LCD screen properly but I never get anything remotely readable through the projector.
	- Satellite 5105 running SuSE 10.0.  It is reputed (by YaST) to have IAN installed by default and the Fn keys are all supposed to work.  They don't.  So I installed FnFx on this machine too (which conflicts with IAN so you have to deinstall it).  This time, Fn-F5 produced a readable display on the projector, but an out-of-synch, badly distorted display on the LCD.  And I had to reboot to get rid of it (even just restarting the X server wouldn't clear this one).  

In neither case, could I get a usable display on both the laptop LCD and on the projector (which is what I want).  

Who's been through this and knows how to hold your mouth right?
