As far as I know this depends on the graphic card. I may be able to help you if you have a NVIDIA card, since it works for me. Other things you may try are (in no particular order and combination thereof): a) Set up BIOS to power both LCD + Analog. b) Switch X resolution to the same of video projector (try 800x600 and 1024x768). c) Plug projector *before* boot computer. However, neither of above got an usable display on both the laptop LCD and on the projector (that is called TwinView by NVIDIA). For that, I had to play with NVDIA's configuration in /etc/X11/XF86Config. You should read the TWinView section of their driver's README[1]. You can "thank" both Toshiba ACPI and NVIDIA or ATI for their carelessness.
