I have extensive C knowledge (and C++ and Java and  others ... I'm a
professional developer at www.cedara.com). I'm not familiar with the kernel,
though; otherwise I'd certainly look at that myself.

Mind you, one should contact the author before doing anything public - some
authors are touchy; and given that there was an update yesterday, the
project isn't dead.

Conversely, submitting bug reports to distros asking about omnibook/laptop
key functionality is unlikely to hurt, I think.
