Turned up to be an X-issue as Numlock seems to work in a virtual
console.
Unfortunately this can *not* be used as a workaround for the following
reason: When trying to change back from tty2 to X, screen goes black
(with backlight on), no response either to <Ctrl+Alt+BkSp> or
<Ctrl+Alt+Del>, so I find myself obliged to hit the power-button :-(
