I have a Toshiba L10-202 laptop with a Celeron M processor, 256 DDRAM and a 40 GB HDD(no wireless card). This laptop comes with Microsoft Windows XP HE SP2 installed. Although this system has a great support for my hardware because of all the Toshiba drivers, I don't like its instability and the fact that when it completes loading (with Norton Internet Security) it uses more that 200 MB of RAM. I am using Slackware Linux for a few years (which is installed on my home computer) so I am used to use tools like gcc, make, java, OpenOffice ... I need a replacement for windows on my laptop. My laptop has a Phoenix BIOS and a buggy DSDT so I have no info about the ac adapter or battery but I can see the orange led blinking when the battery level is too low. Until now I tried SUSE 10 and it worked great(only some problems with the modem). I also tried a live Ubuntu cd. It is nice but I only hav
 e a 56k modem connection so I can't download big programs from the Internet(I like SUSE b!
ecause I
can find all the software I need on its 5 Cd's). I also considered on FreeBSD (Someone told me that FreeBSD has the Smart Battery system included in the kernel!?) but I am afraid of hardware compatibility problems. I saw good reviews for Solaris 10 but this is a system build for servers, not laptops.
I want to choose an operating system to use for several years(that's because I don't think I will make hardware upgrades to this laptop). I need it for editing text, programming in C/C++ Java and PHP, surfing on the Internet...
What operating system do you recommend me to use on my laptop that would have good compatibility with my hardware, stability and enough additional software.
 Thanks!
