Keeping any software updated requires some download time, no matter 
what. For example, you want to use OpenOffice, but if you choose a 
distro that doesn't ship with the newly-released OpenOffice v2.0.1, 
you're looking at about a 190MB download just for that one application. 
If you're never ever ever ever going to update any software ever, I'd 
recommend that you stick with Ubuntu or Knoppix for the better hardware 
support. Ubuntu found the ACPI and audio drivers on my Satellite A25 
that a few other distros wouldn't, and the wireless network support 
worked great out of the box.

I believe Knoppix has a 'live' DVD that you can also install from if you 
want to install extra applications, but you may need to find someone 
with a high speed connection to download it and burn you a copy 
(assuming you have a DVD-ROM drive).
