Try Mandriva (toshiba laptop support is great).
Report why you have to boot with acpi=off to distributions as a bug (you 
shouldn't need to do that).
Report the ethernet issue to distributions as a bug (it should work).
Use NVIDIA/ATI Linux drivers (NVIDIA supports cloning the image of the 
tft on the projector).
Use fnfxd (however, many fn+fx keys won't still work).

Blame Toshiba. Blame NVIDIA. Blame ATI.

I hope it helps. I completely understand your frustration.

Next time, I would recommend testing the laptop with a knoppix cd before 
buying. I will certainly do it for the next one.
