G'day all.

Was there any conclusion to how to make use of the infrared and remote
control? (see below)

My Toshiba Satellite P20 (PSP20A-4EHRZ) came with a tiny Toshiba remote
control.

I want to use this remote to send an "off" signal to my DIY security
camera setup (I'm using the "motion" image processing application with
my Logitech webcam, as packaged for Ubuntu Breezy).

Here are some points of interest, any comments would be much appreciated:

1. I can poweroff using the power button on the remote; I did not have
to do anything at all to have this work. I was surprised at that. I only
have irda "running" (default configuration for Ubuntu Breezy), and no
lirc. Perhaps my remote isn't making use of the infrared port at all?!

2. I have played around with irda. But I don't think it's useful for
what I want to do? Just for interest, my phoenix bios has settings for
this as follows: fir mode, io addr 0x3f8 irq=3 dma=3. However, when
smsc-ircc2 loads, it uses sir 0x2f8 fir 0x6f8 irq=1 dma=3. I don't
understand. My kernel is 2.6.12 (Ubuntu Breezy) and smcinit is part of
the module smsc-ircc2 afaik. I can run irattach irda0 -s to attach the
irda stack to the device but I have nothing to test it with
(unfortunately my nokia mobile doesn't have an ir port).  I don't think
I can use irtty-sir to do what I want to do with the infrared, but I'm
not sure. Can it work in sir mode or just in fir mode (as implied by the
bios)?

3. I tried to compile the lirc module lirc_sir from source. It compiled
using make-kpkg or debian/rules with some firkling around on version
numbers. I had to rename the module suffice to .ko from .o (?!).
However, after removing smsc-ircc2, lirc_sir.ko wouldn't load, modprobe
complained about Invalid module format.

So, not much success so far.
