All too often the problem is with system volume &/or the equalizer. My 
suggestion is to keep system volume low & use the actual hardware 
volume control to make it loud if you need to. If you're using a 
graphic equalizer, keep the actual levels low, below the baseline bar & 
once again, use the hardware volume control to adjust it.
