Thanks for the help, folks.  I have made progress, but still don't have a
full solution.

To get caught up:

1) this is indeed a linux problem.  It has never happened under Windows.
2) the machine is not overheating.  The fan is running at the appropriate
times under linux and is rarely even going into high speed stage.  the
bottom of the machine is not hot to the touch.  So this is an issue with
false signals or mis-interpretation of signals, not an actual thermal
problem (assuming that's what the sudden poweroff is even about)
3) no /var/log/messages didn't show anything.  I checked previously, with no
data about the shutdown at all.  I searched the other /var/log files as
well.  nothing.

Peter, thanks for the acpi=off thing.  This indeed seems to keep the machine
from exhibiting its problems.  Unfortunately, my power meter is also hosed.
Apparently with acpi-able machines, apm doesn't do the job for battery
meters.  Definitely a shame, as now I'm subject (if I'm not careful) to
sudden poweroffs due to dead battery.

Soooo... the big question becomes: is there a fix for the acpi thing?  I did
some web searching and found a page about rewriting the ACPI byte-code, but
I'm pretty sure that's something I don't want to do.  I'm running nearly the
newest linux kernel, so one would assume that the kernel ACPI stuff doesn't
have an update.  I'm still going to build a custom kernel when I get a
chance, and see what that does.

Are there any daemons/utilities that I should try updating as well?
