Does it have an IP address assigned? ... or did you not plug in the ethernet cable so the config routine is sending the DHCP queries into space? Once you get a complete installation, and assuming you still don't have an assigned ethernet address, open YaST and try running the network configuration routine from there. If it doesn't work, need a bit more diagnosis. What error message do you get back? You can always install the network parameters (IP address, netmask, DNS server address) by brute force using ifconfig (see the man page). (The YaST pushbutton routine is just an idiot-resistant front end to ifconfig). I'm not familiar with your particular model, but laptops handle the mainstream Linux distributions pretty well these days. SuSE is a good choice. On my Toshiba Satellite the installation went cleanly, including the ethernet interface.
