If by 'new to Linux' you mean that you have never installed Linux and / 
or never prepared a hard drive for Linux, I would strongly suggest that 
you contact the nearest Linux Users Group (LUG) for help with your first 
install. I'd also suggest that you register for the excellent and free 
of charge, on line course at :

http://www.basiclinux.net

Ubuntu is based on Debian, is easier to install than its parent, and is 
an excellent distribution for laptops in general. However, if your aim 
is to dual boot Win XP and Linux please seek installation help from a 
LUG, because Ubuntu's auto-install routine will completely remove 
Windows before it installs Linux.
