I've installed Ubuntu on a toshiba portege M300 alongside WinXP.
I first installed WinXP, resized the free space to create a FAT32 partition
- which Ubuntu will recognise - and then installed it there. No problem at
all.

Resizing a partition is easy with one of the common tools around (just do a
google search).
