If the disk is in RAID mode, then Linux cannot see the disk at all (because, I guess, the drivers software can't interpret the hardware RAID layout). If you convert to JBOD, there are Linux drivers that can access the disk (as demonstrated by the Ubuntu install that mostly worked). However, the system recovery disks force the machine back into RAID mode, thus making it impossible to create a dual-boot machine. I can only conclude that Toshiba purposfully hobbled this machine to prevent folks like us from running Linux on it.
