Hi, everyone,

I can add that on the 6.06 (Dapper Drake) release of the Ubuntu family of
distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Xubuntu) the fact that you
are running a Toshiba laptop is detected at install and this is all setup
for you.  In /etc/modprobe.d a file is created by the system called
toshiba_acpi.modprobe All the various Toshiba and laptop utilities that
support Toshiba out there written for a recent 2.6.x kernel work without
any special effort.

FWIW, I'm running Xubuntu 6.06 on an old Satellite 1805-S204 (1 GHz
Celeron) with 512MB of RAM.  This distro is significantly faster on the old
machine than Fedora Core 5 with the same XFCE4 desktop and the same
applications.

With older kernels without the Toshiba ACPI module patching the kernel is
the only way to go.
