12 G is more than enough for several operating systems to multiple-boot off. But if you're reluctant to tamper with your hard drive, try one of the live CDs. - download an .iso file. I like Puppy (puppylinux.org) and Knoppix. - fry the .iso file to a blank CD. - reboot from the CD. In both of the above cases, your hard drive will be left alone. You _can_ mount your hard drive and read/write files ... but you can't do it by accident. So your precious Windows will not be tampered with. Puppy has a fairly idiot-resistant install script in the menu. You can install to several different devices including USB sticks and hard drives (both of which I've done - I routinely boot my Dell Lat 600 which has a failed hard drive controller - from USB stick). The pick menu has an entry for flash but I've not tried. I've booted puppy on an older Sony Viao which has a CD drive on a PCMCIA card; all Puppy 1.0.n versions work, but Puppy2 does not (at the moment - ack'd bug in the system).
