Ubuntu and Kubuntu are both 6.06. I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 on my desktop 
and a Samba file server.

A quick look at the links looks like some definite help -- thanks!

I may yet look at Gentoo -- considered it a long time back, but felt 
then it was too much effort.
