I have that model of machine (P15-S409) and have been running Fedora Core on it for some time (my notes say 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5).  That's my everyday OS on this machine.  

The installation from CDs works fine.  
	And with Core 5, the 1280x800 screen can configure correctly (if I recall, it didn't do it automatically, but the System-->Display Settings applet worked right).  
	On at least two of these editions, sound card didn't configure properly quite out of the box ... but got fixed later ... all of the sudden it worked!  (when fiddling with sound card, remember that there's a manual volume wheel on front of machine.  If it gets turned down, ...)
	I've had no problems with wired ethernet coming up and running (home router with dhcp).  WiFi doesn't seem to want to work; not unusual with any flavor of linux, but I don't need and didn't tinker enough to get it working.
	The buttons on front (controlling CD player) and on right of keyboard don't do anything.  
	If you choose Fedora, check out YUM and consider putting the nightly update into automatic.  It works fine for me (and probably accounts for the sound card coming up some time after the install).  

BTW, the hard drive on this model is accessible if you pull the screw marked F6 and remove the CD-ROM drive.  (Occasionally useful for installs on one machine and use on another).

I've also run up live CD Linuxes -- Knoppix and Puppy -- if you want to tinker without actually installing (doesn't touch your hard drive unless you specifically tell it to).  In the case of Puppy, I've booted the OS from USB stick as well.
