[tlinux-users:08296] GPU Fan problems on P100/105 series laptops

Hello,

I've been using linux on my P105-SP6022 for some time now and there is one
large problem that probably needs some information from Toshiba to fix.
Specifically the nVidia 7900GS card is not properly supported by the linux
nVidia drivers (nor the normal nVidia Windows drivers) because Toshiba uses
a proprietary mechanism to control the fans on the graphics cards.  This is
a pretty large problem because it essentially means that running linux on
the machine will cause the graphics card to overheat fairly quickly because
the GPU fans don't turn on (which may actually destroy the machine fairly
quickly).  The problem can be avoided by booting linux with acpi=off (so the
fans always run) but, that disables a lot of useful laptop functionality and
is more of a workaround than a solution.

I was wondering if some technical information could either be shared with
nVidia, myself or the community as a whole so that drivers could be written
to control the proprietary fan control mechanism that Toshiba uses in it's
P100/P105 series of laptop's GPUs.  As it currently stands, it's very
dangerous to install linux on these machines because it could do permanent
damage to the graphics card without the GPU fans running.
