I had awful trouble with networking on my A105 until I figured out
that I needed to disable firewire when booting up the gentoo livecd.
If you can't find any boot options that fix your networking problems,
it is possible to install gentoo (if you're willing to spend a lot of
time and effort getting to know your system internals real well) with
a usb stick. You have to download the necessary source tarballs for
your kernel sources, syslog and dhcp client daemon and burn them to cd
or copy them to a usb stick and stick them in /usr/portage/distfiles
(default location) to get a jumpstart system running from which you
can use the network. I did that before I figured out the nofirewire
trick. If you're interested in Gentoo or probably any other
from-scratch distro you can also use basically any livecd i.e.
systemrescuecd or damnsmalllinux if they are able to boot up
successfully.

But enough about Gentoo. Can you press I (letter i) during bootup with
kubuntu to enter interactive mode? I remember my red hat installation
back in the day had that feature (and I've got it turned on on my
Gentoo-powered Satellite). In interactive mode you might be able to
skip over whatever isn't working. Perhaps with more detailed boot
information is available--try pressing f2 during boot? If you can pin
down the exact problem, solutions would probably be easier to find.
