I've never tried Debian. The latest Ubuntu Feisty Fawn also
works at 1200x800.( It has xorg-7.2 IIRC)

The A135-S2246 has video card: 

 ATI MOBILITYTM RADEON® X200M 128MB dynamically allocated
   shared graphics memory


from what I gathered, the latest xorg-7.2 has better Radeon drivers.

I said it was a long shot, but I'll bet the nvidia drivers are better too,
(addressing the original poster's problem with his Satellite Pro 6100)

My point was OpenSuse's setup and detection is probably the best out there,
and was worth a try over Puppy linux. :-)
