This also happens on my M500.  Others have had this on the M4
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=222921&highlight=m500+suspend)

I'm on Ubuntu Dapper.

It must be a module holding everything up.  I have tried going through
the modules but had no luck.

Hibernate is fine.

I'm sure it worked on initial installation.  Then when I added the extra
 packages and updates the slow behaviour started. So that would have
meant the 686 kernel rather than 386 kernel, restricted modules (i.e.
wireless driver), Network Manager etc.

So I've tried with the 386 kernel. Also tried unloading the wireless
driver (but only on 686 kernel).
