Have you tried a different distro and kernel? 

I've found OpenSuSE 10.3-alpha to be very up-to-date
and working..... same with Slackware-current.

It uses 2.6.20 , if I recall correctly. The 2.6 series of kernel
went thru some big changes from 2.6.18 to 2.6.20, so it's 
worth a shot.
