I have problems with a A!#%-s2376 Satellite which is new, maybe the problem is similar. I have got mplayer working - obviously using SVGA Server (text mode?). Also before I blewup my X11 installation I got my card to talk to the bus and output a lot more info before the fatal crash (output binary data to xorg.conf files and ruined them). Try in your Device section - xorg.conf-xxx or XF86Conf configure files BusID "PCI:1:5:0" VideoRam "128000" IRQ "11" I determined this from the file output of lcspci which you included in the Toshiba system email. Perhaps IRQ is unnecessary, but I see your machine shares IRQ 11 with the Ethernet Adapter. I also saw reference to OPTION "noAccel" put in the Screen Section per my memo notebook notes. Also reference this on the internet. http://www.xfree86.org/current/XF86Config.5.html As a strategy failing to get lucky and just get the ATI Video to work - the first time. You might shoot to get it talking on the bus, not crashing and ruining files with binary data and the like (file corruption). And inspect the Xorg.logs in perhaps /var/log/Xorg.log.whatever for info on the chip type and other revealing infomation. Also back up your config files to another location - preferably a thumb drive. The ATI card is finicky and I don't trust it without the specific correct configuration and driver it likes. Also check the AMD ATI site for ATI drivers one came out just last month. AMD will probably get ATI to do things correctly but its going to take time. Also clean up your file system if you experience file corruption or the like. How is the MACH64 Server linked in X11 nowadays? Supposedly this is necessary for proper driver operation.
