Thanks for all who replied.
It seems the 60Hz refresh rate is the optimum for LCDs, so I'll leave this at that for now.

I'm not sure how many computers bought recently will ever
be hooked up to a CRT, but I suspect it isn't many (the
most commonly connected monitors will be LCD screens and
projectors) so it doesn't seem to me to be very justified
taking time to solve a problem that probably won't even
show up unless you have reason to believe it will.
