Up until recently suspend has taken 5 minutes for me on my Portege M500.
A patch to fix this is in the 2.6.23 kernel.
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7780
I have backported that patch to the Ubuntu Feisty kernel (2.6.20). You
can see details at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90771
The patch currently includes the following laptops:
* Portege M500
* Satellite U200
* Tecra M5
* Tecra M7
* Satellite U205
* M3
I suspect the problem also occurs on the M4
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=222921) and probably by
association on the M6.
I have also applied the original patch to the Ubuntu Gutsy kernel
(2.6.22). See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/139045
The patches and Ubuntu binary packages for testing are available at
http://203.143.225.228/feisty/
http://203.143.225.228/gutsy/
If there are any M4/M6 Ubuntu users affected by this I'm willing to
rebuild the kernel so they can test. Just send me the output of 'sudo
dmidecode'
Regards
...Peter
