This has absolutely nothing to do with dual-boot issues.  Indeed, has nothing to do with the OS at all.

What I do know that works is that most Word file types are easily readable by openOffice (and Abiword, for that matter).  Unless a new release of Word has invented yet more new proprietary file types (a not unknown event), you won't have a problem.
