I'm talking about the "file type" option on the "Save As" menu in Microsoft Word (in Vista), not the filesystem types on the media.

First of all FAT _is_ a uSoft proprietary format; it's been reverse-engineered long enough that we've all forgot.  Second, USB sticks commonly come with a FAT default format, so the FAT partition on hard drive should function identically. 

Beyond that, NTFS has been reverse engineered long enough that it's appeared in several Linux distributions.  First as read-only, but now as r/w.  So Liliane could probably use NTFS in lieu of FAT.

Caveat: not handy to test all this because I run a Windows-Free Zone
