What Ubuntu version did you try so far? 6.10? 7.04? For what I read
earlier in some Ubuntu forums, I consider the GMA X3000 graphics
adapter built into the A205-S4777 to be the source of the problem.
Referring to some forum posts ([1], in example), support for this card
might have somewhat improved in oncoming gutsy release (which is about
to be released on thursday IIRC) so you might want to check this one on
your machine.
