Try Gentoo at http://www.gentoo.org  or Sabayon 
http://www.sabayonlinux.org/ a Linux distribution based on Gentoo. I 
recommend to use a DVDWR or CDWR in order to avoid waste Cd's. As 
someone told you before it is better to try whit LIVE-CD or LIVE-DVD 
first before to proceed installing any distribution.
All documentation available for Gentoo can be applied for Sabayon too, 
so both of them have nice documentation for X86 and X86_64 between 
others architectures.
 From a console under UBUNTU type:
sudo lspci
It will provide you information about your current hardware detected as 
well as its version, so it will be useful for you to look for a solution 
at the Linux community.
Also from the console type
sudo lsusb
It will provide information about all your USB devices as well.
