I have a Toshiba P205-S6287 running Kubuntu with the same problem. Toshiba
uses the sound card for the modem function, and to date I don't know of a
correct driver for it. My solution was to buy a Zoom USB modem. It comes
with Linux drivers. You may need to tweek the settings to get it to respond
faster than 9600 baud, but I think I can find the e-mail from the chip maker
explaining the changes required.
