I did work alot with this stuff to get my L400 to work. It is indeed
that the XP drivers use some undocumented win API which is not yet
compatible with ndiswrapper.

There is a kernelsolution using a realy dirty hack. But after trying a
bit forth and back I decided to use the 98 drivers with ndiswrapper. I
don't have any problems with it - currently using it in fact.
Under Gnome I experianced it does not shouw in Networkmanager but in KDE
it does. under gnome i just went forward using if-up/if-down config in
conjunction with wpa_supplicant.

For the installation i discovered that you need to add the explicit
hardware-id to modprobe.d
