Interested in an alternative strategy? Try this: Go to puppylinux.org and download a copy of puppy. The most recent version= is 3.01 and you want one of the last couple. Fry the .iso on a CD. Then boot the CD. It should come up into puppy (and leave your hard drive = entirely undisturbed -- so you haven't lost anything. There's a 'setup' ic= on on the top row (wrench) and in there is a menu button which executes the= ethernet / and wifi setup. Try it out: if it sees both your wired etherne= t and your wifi card, it will give you configuration options for both eth0 = and eth1. And it will tell you what drivers it loaded to accomodate each (= which is a clue to your ubuntu needs). I've found that the config script i= s pretty good -- it finds the wifi drivers accurately for several different= (including a couple old PCMCIA) pieces of hardware ... and it finds my nei= ghbor's AP and gets an IP address assignment from his DHCP server pretty re= liably too;-) If that works (and puppy doesn't seduce you) you know 1) that the wifi hard= ware is ticking and 2) what driver you need. Both of which should be of so= me value when you pop the Puppy CD and reboot to whatever was on your hard = drive before.
