I gotta say that we use 3 LB using UM, and all off them use Bonding driver, but in our configuracion they all use the bonding mode=active-backup, we haven't tried with other modes of bonding, but so far the activebackup works flawlessly... and you don't need anything special on the switches. We use bonding to have a switch/NIC fault tolerant solution.
