I gotta say that we use 3 LB using UM, and all off them use Bonding driver, but in our configuracion they all use the bonding mode=active-backup,  we haven't tried with other modes of bonding, but so far the activebackup works flawlessly... and you don't need anything special on the switches.
 
We use bonding to have a switch/NIC fault tolerant solution.

Yes, it works great with bonding.

 

I remember there used to be a problem with arptables having a direct reference to eth0 but I think that has been fixed, if not simply change it in the batch file.
