Please do. 

Chances are, if you can view Japanese characters on your system in X, then the 
fonts are likely installed. The next thing to do is get canna and/or Wnn 
running. With your extensive expereince, the installation of these should 
present no challenge.

Seems to me the input systems are 'toggled' with SHIFT-SPACE.....
At least the last time I used Kterm, and Mozilla for Japanese input that was 
how. The toggling is different for Chinese input (for when you are ready for 
the 'next level' ;) )
