  systemsettings -> advanced -> session manager -> on login

  I suspect that somehow this is related with knetworkmanager calling 
nm-applet (for now) as this features works for all other applets.

  It is missing yes. It is possible to add an Icon applet into the panel, the 
problem later seems to be its configuration. I guess that we could chase it 
under ~/.kde and manually change the configuration file... Or wait for one of 
the 4.0.x releases. :-)

  I disagree in the sense that all the other applications are working for me, 
I would not call konqueror or okular or konsole or dolphin or ... beta 
releases. I know that plasma is important for lots of reasons but let us not 
name the forrest after one tree. :-)
