In the OpenSS7 2.18.1 release, the installed init script creates devices
on each boot.  It is an easy way around both udev and devfs (e.g. Mandrake
10 with 2.4 kernel).  Linux Fast-STREAMS uses a similar approach; however,
it will eventually support udev directly from within the kernel.
