    It's taken a while for me to work this out.  If I've

If you have a x86-64 based system that can boot from USB I would 
recommend have a look at the mini images. Basically those are self 
contained LEAF systems that should boot out of the box. They have the 
latest hdsupp and allow you to install copies of itdself to other media. 
If you are not happy with the proposed layout all you have to do is to 
create your own disk layout and tell the script to use that.

It will build a small LEAF system but with the fetch_pkg utility it 
allows you to install whatever additional package you like at a whiff, 
even using the webconf interface.
