The bitrate in case of access point does not make sense and is set to 
default. Actually the AP allows connection up to 11 mbps. You can 
check the RX/TX speeds of your clients by going into statistics.

I can see two possible reasons:

1) IRQ routing problem
2) Incompatible firmware (not 1.5.6)

Both issues have been discussed on the list several times in the past.
