Ensure ALFS build is compatible with valgrind

I have decided to setup a test enviroment for use with valgrind.
I need to ensure that my ALFS build is fully compatible with valgrind.
ie I believe that this can be acheived if the compiler is passed march=x86-64.
If this is so how can I ensure that when I run the ALFS make that this option
is included in the final system build phase.
I assume that this is irrelevant for the tool building activities.
