Weird issues xfce Wayland, fixed by cold reboots ?

Hi,

I've been building enough of xfce-4.20pre1 to play with it on one
machine.  This is a machine running BLFS-12.2 with my completed full
X11 desktop, only minimal security updates.

The aim was to use 'startxfce4 --wayland' and see if I could get my
own patched xkeyboard-config working. Specifically, extra dead keys
for accents, and using CapsLock as Compose - examples on next line

That is now working with both wayfire and labwc compositors (wayfire
worked yesterday, but I had other issues, installed labwc to see if
different).  But the following only got fixed after cold boots
(i.e. power off, wait, boot):

1. Unable to logout (DBus could not find org.xfce.SessionManager).
Switched to tty3. killed the compositor.

2. no visible workspaces in xfce4 panel, and no icons in them to
click on, panel showed 'workspace0', ctrl-alt-cursor-left|right to
switch workspaces not working.

3. after building labwc trying to identify where the panel issue
was, no change in that, and my Compose key was not working.

I find this all really weird.

More worrying, the screen kepy blanking unless I moved my mouse.
When I shutdown last night there was a brief message on the tty from
xscreensaver about wayland.

When I cold booted today, I saw that xscreensaver WAS running
(killall -KILL fixed that). But that is what I really do not
understand - I invoke xscreensaver, if present, from ~/.xinitrc.
On a fresh X11 system I have little more than fluxbox, the deps for
xscreensaver and xfce come later.  So, xwayland is invoking
~/.xinitrc ?  Seems unlikely.

All very weird, and loads of extra packages (some only for testing
other packages).  Will try to document what I did over the next few
days.
