instead of 'startxfce4 --wayland', only noticedi much later when I
logged out and then did cursor-up to confirm what I'd been using.

Meanwhile - it turns out that Wayland lacks a workspace protocol, so
4.20 will not support workspaces, but hopefully a change after 4.20
is released will fix workspaces for the labwc compositor.

That makes Wayland on xfce-4.20 less than useful for me, even if I
do find out what I've either built in the wrong order, or that
something needs a bootscript on sysv.

Summary for now: although both labwc and wayfire have been mentioned
as alternative compositors, it looks as if labwc will be the way to
go.
